Upstyles remain the favourite hairstyle for high school students planning their formal-night look.

Hairdresser Lucy Rodriguez, who recently opened her own salon, The Look Artistic Team, in Warrawong said the idea was to create a style to suit the wearer and the type of dress she planned to wear.

``A lot of the young women know exactly what they want but if others are uncertain we look through style books to see what the latest looks are and work from there," she said. ``In the basic idea of upstyles we can incorporate curls and twists, half up, half down looks, twists with spikes and lots of other variations.

``Even if a girl has short hair we can achieve a glamorous upstyle using hair pieces, so anything is possible."

If a colour was required it was advisable to have it done a week or at least a few days ahead of the event to allow it to settle.

``The colour adds shine and adds that little bit extra to the special night," Ms Rodriguez said.
